7.3-magnitude quake rocks Japan

An earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale jolted east coast of Honshu island in Japan Friday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. There was no immediate report of any casualty.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10.0 km, was initially determined to be at 37.1942 degrees north latitude and 144.663 degrees east longitude, Xinhua reported.

All but two of Japan’s 50 reactors have been offline since the March 2011 magnitude-9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami triggered multiple meltdowns and massive radiation leaks at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, about 250 kilometers northeast of Tokyo.

About 19,000 people were killed.
