Seven people were washed away in Mundu river along with a car and Vazhayil bridge at Vallithode St Anapanthi near Iritty following a landslip due to rains near iritty in Kannur district today. According to Iritty police, the marooned people were rescued by some locals and a police team. The incessant rains that lashed Iritty, Aralam and Karikottakiri areas damaged several houses and agricultural crops in the areas. Meanwhile, another bridge at Karikottakiri was partially damaged hitting road traffic Flooding was also reported at many areas near Iritty as the river was in spate.
Landslip were reported at three places in the areas in the morning. However, there was no report of any casualty, police said. The car was washed away when the bridge collapsed, while the driver of the car, Sandeep, escaped by swimming to safety the six people, Raghavan, Madhu, Balakrishnan, James Mathew, Harshad and Sumesh, who fell into the river, while walking on the bridge were later rescued by locals.
Police sounded a red alert at Iritty and Kelakam areas which were being lashed by heavy rain since yesterday. The land slips were reported at this morning,police said. UNI
