7.1 magnitude earthquake jolts Peru

New Delhi: An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale struck near the Peru-Brazil border on Friday.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake’s depth was 609.5 km and occurred at 9:04 am (UTC). The epicentre of the earthquake was located 250 km northwest of Puerto Maldonado in Peru.
There is no report of any damage or casualty as yet.

Peru is situated in the Ring of Fire, an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean, which is vulnerable to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
