New Delhi, July 08: A total of 6,540 Indian prisoners, including 121 women, are incarcerated in jails of various countries across the world, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.
The Government of India, through its missions abroad, along with the foreign governments is making all possible efforts to provide necessary assistance to Indians lodged in foreign jails, Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor said in a written reply.
Tharoor said efforts such as “requesting local authorities for speedy trials, seeking remission of sentence, seeking consular access to detainees and prisoners, providing advice and guidance in legal and other matters, ensuring fair and humane treatment in foreign jails and repatriation to India of those who are released” have been taken by the government to assist the prisoners.
A maximum of 1369 Indians are in jails in Saudi Arabia followed by UAE with 1221 Indians in jails.
There are 855 Indians in jails in Pakistan, including two women, followed by Bangladesh with 338 prisoners.
In the United States, there are 225 Indians in jail, including 11 women and in the United Kingdom, there are 375 Indians, including 7 women in the jail.
