60 % seats for women in IITs remained vacant last year

New Delhi: The 60 percent seats reserved for women in Indian Institute of Technology went vacant in the last academic year, despite efforts by the Narendra Modi government to increase the number of female students in IITs.

Out of 2,264 female candidates were allotted seats in the IITs in 2016, only 848 had joined, the HRD ministry statistics revealed. Sources stated that the government is trying hard to improve enrolment of women in technical institutes hoping to see an increase in their number this academic year, reports DC.

As the process of admission is not yet over, the government hopes more female candidates to take admission.

To ensure an effort to improve female enrollment in the B.Tech Programmes in IITs, a committee was set up to suggest suitable measures. Its report was considered by the IIT Council in its 51st meeting held in April 2017 and it was decided to increase female enrollment from the current 8 percent to 14 per cent in 2018-19.
