6 more students test positive; St John’s School shuts for seven days

Chandigarh, Nov 18: After two students of St John’s School, Sector-26, tested positive for swine flu, the school has shut down for a week. The students are brothers and live in Sector 9, Chandigarh. They study in Class I and III. Both have been quarantined with their family members.

This is the fifth educational institute in the city to shut down following swine flu cases. Earlier, St Anne’s Covent, DAV Public School, PEC University, and the Chandigarh College of Architecture (CCA) had suspended all classes.

The ongoing Golden Jubilee celebrations at St John’s have been postponed. Only on Monday the school had released a brochure after which the celebrations were kicked off.

Another positive case has been reported from Ryan International School, Sector 49. A Class VII student has tested positive. He has been admitted in the PGI. According to health officials, the boy is stable and responding to treatment.

The school has, meanwhile, suspended Class VII C for a week.

With these cases, the number of people affected with the virus has increased to 110 in the city. Incidentally, all cases since November 12 have been reported from schools and colleges.

Four more samples were sent for testing on Tuesday.

The city, according to swine flu nodal officer H C Gera, has a stock of around 7,000 Tamiflu tablets.

“We are in touch with the Centre and have apprised them of the consumption and requirement here,” Gera said.

Twelve students of the Stepping Stones School, Sector 37, meanwhile, were sent home after they displayed flu-like symptoms. Vivek High School, Sector 38, also sent four students home after they showed symptoms.

At DPS, Sector 40, a doctor was called to examine thestudents.

3 students tests positive in Mohali, Panchkula on alertThree students, including a 12-year-old boy tested positive, on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases to 12. Instructions have been issued to all schools to take necessary precautions.

As a precautionary measure, schools have started sending students with even common cough and cold back home.

Yadavindra Public School has banned the morning assembly and issued advisory to parents not to send their wards if they complain of cough, cold and fever.

Similarly, Lawerance Public Senior Secondary School has cancelled the morning assembly. The school has also postponed its annual function, slated for December 5.

In Panchkula, guidelines have been issued by the Administration to all schools. Panchkula Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Yadav said a meeting of government and private school principals will be held to discuss measures to contain the virus. Last week, a teenaged girl had lost her life to swine flu.
