Sanaa, September 29: At least six people have been killed during a new outbreak of clashes between troops loyal to Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh and the opposition forces, Press TV reports.
The victims died on Thursday in a shelling by the Saleh troops in the southern city of Taizz.
Earlier, one person was killed and 10 others were injured in clashes between government soldiers and forces led by General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, leading forces that have defected from the government, in the capital Sana’a.
The Yemeni capital has been ravaged by days of fighting between the Saleh troops and the opposition.
Large numbers of people, mostly peaceful anti-regime protesters, have been killed by Saleh’s loyalists.
The protesters are demanding an immediate ouster of the Saudi and US-backed regime of Ali Abdullah Saleh, who has been ruling the country over the past three decades.
Saleh, who was in Saudi Arabia to receive treatment for the injuries he suffered in an early June attack on his palace, defied opposition calls to step down and returned to the country on September 23.
Hundreds of people have been killed so far during a regime-ordered crackdown on anti-government protests.
Since Saleh’s return last Friday, more than 170 protesters have been killed in a newly revived brutal campaign against popular demonstrations in the capital.
