6 die, over 150 fall ill in Solapur

Solapur (Maharashtra), March 07: Six persons, including a child, died here today and over 150 people have been hospitalised allegedly after drinking contaminated water, officials said.

Seven-year-old Dattatreya Survase, Nagesh Gundals (35), Ramesh Gunjetti (15), Govindamma Pobatti (35) Nagesh Pratipalli (45) and Uma Vitla (35) died allegedly after consuming contaminated water.

The deceased belonged to Kranati slum area in Ashok Chowk, Guardian Minister Laxmanrao Dhobale said today after visiting suspected gastroenteritis patients at the civil hospital here.

Since last two days, residents of the slum tenements were complaining of vomiting and stomach pain after consuming water. The water samples have been sent for testing, Dhobale said.

The minister directed the Solapur Municipal Corporation officials to tackle the situation.

Meanwhile, condition of some of the patients in the hospital is stated to be critical.
