Hyderabad, April 4: As assured by the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy during the International Women’s Day celebrations recently, 50 per cent reservation will be provided for women in all local bodies. Chief Minister is trying to make legislations in this regard and he wants to see that women are given 50 percent representation in the next local body elections.
The government has taken a policy decision in this regard. With this decision representation of women in Panchayat Raj and city local bodies will go up to 50 percent from the present 33 percent. These reservations will be provided in each category of reservation i.e. SC, ST, BC. And the general category will have 50 per cent reservation for women.
According to A.P. Panchayat Raj Act, the reservation provided for women is “not less than 1/3rd. The new law will increase this to 50 percent.
Andhra Pradesh is playing a significant role in empowering women. 9.86 lakh women are actively taking part in Self Help Groups. In addition to that 1 crore rural and urban women are also participating.
Andhra Pradesh is the first State to provide free education for girls up to Intermediate and 33 per cent reservation for girls in all colleges including professional courses like Engineering, MBBS, MCA, MBA and other PG degrees.
