50 Gandhi doctors taken ill after snacking

Hyderabad September 20: About 50 doctors in Gandhi General Hospital last night fell ill and were hospitalised allegedly due to food poisoning. The doctors. including surgeons, specialists and post-graduate students of the gynaecology department complained of sickness after having snacks provided during a seminar.

The gynaecology department of the hospital organised a seminar yesterday on the hospital premises. A private bakery supplier, Mac Allen in Padmarao Nagar, supplied egg puffs and sandwiches at the seminar. Doctors complained of vomiting, stomach pain and loose motions late in the night and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Dr Ashok Kumar, the hospital superintendent, said they suspected possible food poisoning only after a few doctors were admitted in the hospital with fever and vomiting.

The condition of 17 doctors is stated to be serious. A three-member team headed by Dr Tripura Sundari of the gynaecology department is probing the incident and will submit a report in three days, he said.

Meanwhile, a team of food inspectors from the GHMC inspected the bakery and found the kitchen to be unhygienic. Food samples were taken to check adulteration and for bacteriological analysis.
