5-year-old girl”s rape case: Protest intensifies outside Delhi Police HQ

Hundreds have gathered outside the Delhi Police headquarters in ITO, New Delhi to protest the faulty investigations in the rape of a five-year-old child in the national capital, as well as an assault by a police officer on a woman protester.

According to television reports, students from JNU as well as members of the Aam Aadmi Party were heard shouting slogans demanding Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar to come out and make a statement.

Earlier, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said he was “deeply disturbed” over the rape and brutality committed on a five-year-old girl and asked the society to work to root out the evil.

A statement released by the Prime Minister”s Office said that Dr. Singh has been deeply disturbed to hear news of the shameful incident in which a five year-old child in Delhi was sexually abused and is now fighting for her life in hospital.

The release further said Dr. Singh has also seen news visuals of the completely unacceptable treatment meted out by police officers to some women protesting against this incident.

” Dr. Singh has spoken to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and has conveyed to him the need for the strictest possible action to be taken against the erring officials and called for appropriate medical care for the young victim of the sexual assault,” the release added.

It further said: “The Prime Minister has once again reiterated the need for society to look deep within and work to root out the evil of rape and other such crimes from our midst.”

The girl was abducted on April 15 and kept hostage in a flat owned by the attacker. He lived on the ground floor of the building in east Delhi”s Gandhi Nagar, in which the victim”s family also stayed.

The girl was rescued when members of her family heard her scream on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, the accused, Manoj Kumar, was arrested from Muzaffarpur in Bihar this morning. He was arrested by a team from Delhi with the help of local police.

Kumar who had come to Chiknouta, his in-laws place by a train, was traced after tracking his mobile phone location. (ANI)
