5 massive blasts jolt central Baghdad

Baghdad, April 06: Five heavy explosions have rocked through Baghdad with one of them hitting near a ministry building in the center of the Iraqi capital, an interior ministry official says.

The blast in the center of the city occurred on Tuesday near the public works ministry close to Haifa street in Salhiyeh neighborhood, AFP reported.

The incident happened when a bomber blew himself up at a popular restaurant.

Ambulances and emergency service workers rushed to the scene as a large column of smoke rose from the explosion site close to the ministry building.

Sources within Iraq’s defense ministry said the attacks left more than 10 people killed and some 35 others wounded.

The ministry compound is located opposite the justice ministry, both of which were hit by a massive vehicle bomb in October.

On Sunday, three successive vehicle bombings targeted regional and European embassies, killing 30 people and wounding more than 200.
