Five prisoners escaped from the Jashpur district jail by scaling the 20-ft high prison walls last night, police said. The incident came to light this morning when the jail authorities made their routine headcounts and found five inmates missing. Police was immediately informed about the incident. All police stations in the district were alerted and teams sent to carry out raids on the possible hideouts of the inmates, who were all convicted in different crimes, the sources said. The escaped prisoners were identified as Nirmal Lohar, Naresh, Tuleswar Yadav, Ranjit Jena and Ashkar Tirki — a convicted murderer.
An investigation is underway to find out possible prison employees’ complicity in the incident, police added. UNI
