5 more held for attacking Manoj Tiwari’s staff

New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested five more persons, including a cook at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, for allegedly barging into the residence of Delhi BJP chief and MP Manoj Tiwari and attacking his staff members.

The five persons — Jagdish Chander (42), Parshu Ram (32), Pardeep Kumar (24), Sunil Kumar (33) and Om Parkash (31) — were held late last night, hours after two brothers — Jai Kumar and Jaswant — were arrested in connection with the matter.

Jagdish works as a cook at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and is the elder brother of Jai Kumar and Jaswant.

Jai Kumar was travelling in a car which bumped into a vehicle driven by one of Tiwari’s staffers just outside the MP’s house in Lutyens’s Delhi at around 1.30 AM yesterday.

He then called his friends, who arrived armed with rods and sticks in a car and on two motorcycles. The men entered the MP’s residence and thrashed his staff. The act was caught on the CCTV cameras installed on the premises, the police said.

“Seven persons have been arrested. We have also traced the car in which the other accused had arrived,” said DCP, New Delhi, BK Singh.

The leader’s aides have also alleged that the attackers hurled remarks like “we will send these Biharis back”.

“It has emerged that they made some objectionable remarks. We are investigating whether it was in the heat of the moment,” said the DCP.

The officer reiterated that it was not a “road rage” incident.

“It’s not a case of road rage. A few persons arrived on motorcycles and then a few others came in a car. There was some sort of planning,” he said.

The police said they are scanning the CCTV footage to identify the other accused.

Tiwari, an MP from North East Delhi, had alleged a conspiracy behind the attack on his personal assistant, cook and driver and the ransacking of his residence.

The police, which had earlier dubbed it as a case of “road rage”, later said it could be a planned attack.
