Khammam, March 28: An uncovered ditch dug for construction of additional class rooms at the Government Ashram High School building proved fatal for two tribal girls at Boddugudem village in Chintur mandal on Sunday.
According to information reaching here, U. Vani Sri, 9, a class IV student of ashram school of Tekulaboru village in Kunavaram mandal, and Nageshwari, 4, a student of a local Anganwadi centre, both residents of Boddugudem, accidentally slipped into the rain-water filled ditch adjacent to the school building while playing nearby it in the village on Sunday afternoon.
The pit had been dug along with several other ditches for construction of additional class rooms adjoining the school under the development plan for Left-wing extremism affected areas. Water accumulated in the uncovered pits following heavy rain on Friday night, sources added. A pall of gloom descended on the village in the aftermath of the tragic death of the two girls. Poignant scenes were witnessed at the site as the family members of the victims wept inconsolably. When contacted, Chintur SI Sagar said that the alleged lapses if any on the part of the contractor concerned would be probed after receiving complaints from the parents of the deceased.
Nalgonda Correspondent adds: Three girls – Renuka, 12, Rajeshwari, 13, and Ramya, 7, met a watery grave in a local tank at Vallabhapuram village in Chivvemula mandal in the district on Sunday afternoon when they went to wash clothes. According to information reaching the district headquarters here, four other girls, who were accompanying the victims, were saved by a passer-by Anjaiah, an employee of the Jails Department, when they raised alarm.
