5 civilians killed, injured in E Afghanistan

Kabul, March 19: At least one civilian has been killed and four others left injured in an attack by US-led troops in the eastern province of Nangarhar in Afghanistan.

The civilians were killed on Saturday after a suspected US drone aircraft shelled an area where farmers were working, a Press TV correspondent reported.

A provincial spokesman has also confirmed the deadly attack on the Afghan civilians.

No official statement has been issued so far by the US military concerning the number of people killed or injured in the incident.

Earlier on Saturday, two US-led soldiers with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) lost their lives in a shooting incident in Afghanistan’s southern region.

The increase in the number of deaths among US-led foreign troops in tandem with the heavy civilian casualties have given rise to a marked intensification of global opposition to the US-led mission in Afghanistan.

The Afghan interior ministry recently said that last year saw an increase in the number of civilians’ deaths since the US-led invasion in 2001.

The ministry stated that more than 2,000 civilians lost their lives in violence across Afghanistan, making 2010 the deadliest year ever for civilian casualties in war-hit country.

Last year was also the deadliest of the nearly decade-long war for international troops, with more than 700 killed, compared to just more than 500 in 2009. In January, 31 American and other NATO troops were killed.
