Dubai, April 08: A total of 441 people were arrested for working illegally in Dubai in March, Dubai Municipality said on Wednesday.
The law-breakers from various countries included 304 street vendors, 44 beggars, 63 car cleaners and 30 illegal butchers and fish cleaners, who would be deported by Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD) in coordination with Dubai Police, the civic body said in a press release.
It said the illegal workers were arrested by municipality inspectors, in cooperation with Dubai Police and the DNRD.
The drive also resulted in the seizure of several low-quality consumer goods and pirated CDs.
Some 3,547 DVDs of pirated films, 216 pornographic movies, in addition to 377 foodstuff items including rice, Tahina, oil, and boxes of fruits and vegetables were seized last month.
A total of 329 counterfeit products, including ready-made garments, perfumes, cameras, and watches that were fake international brands were also confiscated. The municipality said the seized goods would be destroyed and disposed of safely after legal action was taken against the violators.
Civic inspectors conduct daily spot checks in streets and public places to prevent street vending, begging and car washing in public places in violation of a ruling by the Ministry of Labour in this regard. Inspectors at the Markets Administration Section in the Assets Management Department carry out regular checks to book the violators.
The municipality urged the public to call its toll-free number 800900 to report such illegal activities.
