43% deaths in women due to breast cancer

Hyderabad, October 18: A two-day course in detection and diagnosis of early breast cancer was jointly organised by the Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation and Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here on Saturday.

It was inaugurated by Dr P V Ramesh, principal secretary, medical and health, and was attended by several experts in the field.

Breast cancer is the second major cause of cancer deaths in women after lung cancer.

About 43 per cent of deaths among women were reported across the globe due to breast cancer and the figure is likely to shoot up in the near future, said Dr Laszlo Tabar, professor of breast cancer radiology in Sweden, who conceived and designed the course. He is considered to be the godfather of breast imaging.

Addressing the gathering, Dr P Raghu Ram, CEO, Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation, said the course, which has been a resounding success the world over for over three decades, is being held for the second time in the Indian subcontinent.

The focus of the course is to highlight the facts relating to screening mammograms in early detection of breast cancer and the skills regarding reading and interpreting the mammograms in a scientific manner.

According to Ramesh, breast cancer cases are on the rise in the country.
