Hyderabad, October 31: Demanding that the state government cancel the official celebration of the AP Formation Day on November 1, four students of Osmania University launched a hunger strike inside the Arts College today afternoon.
Naveen Yadav, D Balaraj, K Koti and Vikram had locked themselves inside a room and began their fast, OU Joint Action Committee members said. More than 100 students and other pro-Telangana activists gathered outside the room creating mild tension on the campus.
The agitators were demanding that chief minister K Rosaiah should not hoist the tricolour on November 1 as part of the celebrations, OUJAC member P Kailash told Express. “Students of all Telangana universities will take up protest programmes across Telangana on that day. We have decided to observe November 1 as betrayal day,” Kailash said.
The fasting students also demanded that none of the Telangana ministers should participate in the November 1 celebration.
Senior police officials visited the Arts College and reviewed the situation.
They are making plans to shift the fasting students.
Meanwhile, Telangana political JAC chairman professor M Kodandaram visited the college and extended his support to the agitating students. “When the Srikrishna Committee is going to give its report by December 31 what is the need for organising celebrations?” he questioned.
