Udaipur, Rajasthan, January 08: In September last year, villagers of Godli near Udaipur had paraded a married woman and her lover naked in the village and tortured them as police watched the scene, but after a media outcry, 24 persons were rounded up by Udaipur police.
Now, a fresh twist: the same woman has filed a petition in the court alleging she was raped by her lover.
She has also levelled charges of confinement against the lover’s family members.
The court has forwarded the complaint to the police for a fresh probe, says Sudhir Joshi, Additional SP, Udaipur.
The 35-year-old woman’s husband works abroad, and she fell in love with a 25-year-old man.
In September, the villagers caught both of them, asked the woman’s sister to tear off her clothes, both lovers were paraded naked in the village and then hair shorn.
All this took place in the presence of police who remained passive spectators. The local villagers had asked the police not to interfere in their brand of Talibani justice.
But as MMS of the torture appeared in the media, the police was forced to act and 24 persons were rounded up. But now, the case has suddenly taken a U-turn because of obvious pressures from the villagers on the woman.
