Guntur, March 14: Finally, the Railway Board has given green signal for construction of railway under bridges (RUBs) at the level crossings at Syamala Nagar, Nehrun Nagar and Kankaragunta in the city and a railway over bridge (ROB) at Sanjeevaiah Nagar to ease traffic congestion in Guntur city. The proposals had been pending for the past two and half decades.
The Indian Railways and the Roads and Buildings Department have agreed to share the project cost.
The RUB at Syamala Nagar is estimated to cost Rs 9 crore, Nehru Nagar RUB Rs 2.5 crore and Sanjeevaiah Nagar ROB Rs 30 crore. It has also been proposed to widen the overbridge from Sankar Vilas Centre and to lay a link road by constructing three bridges costing Rs 50 crore each.
According to a senior railway official, the Railway Board may not accept the overbridge widening proposal as similar proposals are pending with it. A joint committee constituted with officials of R&B, Indian Railways and Guntur Municipal Corporation has made it clear that construction of an ROB was not feasible at Brodiepet railway level crossing.
Meanwhile, people of Kothapet have sought construction of an ROB at the railway level crossing in their area to avoid traffic congestion during closure of the gate.
