3.5 million litres per day of sewage water discharged in Musi River

Musi River was once the city’s most important water body. Bearing in mind its importance, Puranapul, Nayapul, Muslim Jung Pul and other bridges were made in Qutub Shahi and Asifjahi eras besides constructing Himayat Sagar and Omsan Sagar dams on the river. The importance attached to it can be denoted with the fact that Andhra Pradesh High Court, City College, Mahatma Gandhi bus station, Osmania General hospital, Salarjung museum and state central library were constructed on the bank of Musi river. However due to criminal negligence of governments, government bodies especially tourism department, the Musi River has turned in to a sewage line; where right from the sewage to industrial wastes are dumped.

There is also a Dhobi Ghat situated along the river. The river water is also being used for bathing and washing clothes used by patients’ hospital bed sheets etc. The polluted water has become breeding ground for mosquitoes which in turn increases threat of various diseases.

Last year government bodies revealed that illegal houses have been constructed on 57721 sqyds land of Musi River. Besides that illegal religious structures are sprouting like weeds day by day in the Musi River and these activities are going unchecked by the Municipal Corporation and Tourism Department. The question is despite thousands of rupees being spent on the Musi Revival Project why the river continues to remain a nala?
