32 convicted in Gujarat riot case

Mehsana, November 09: A special court in Gujarat has convicted 32 people out of 73 accused in one of the nine Gujarat riots cases of 2002. The court in Mehsana delivered the judgement on Wednesday in the Sardarpura riot case in which 33 people were burnt alive in Sadarpura March 1, 2002.

The charges against those convicted included murder, arson and rioting.

But the court also acquitted 41 people accused of being involved in the case. The quantum of sentence will be announced later.

There were some district-level Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders among the 73 people arrested in connection with the case.

Sadarpura is one of nine Gujarat riots cases handed over to Special Investigation Team.

The Sardarpura case is the first post-Godhra train burning case in which convictions have taken place.
