30000 street children in Hyderabad: Survey Report

Hyderabad: According to a survey conducted by an NGO, there are about 30,000 street children in Hyderabad. The survey also revealed that the efforts taken by the government to ensure welfare of street children are insufficient. The survey was conducted by an NGO ‘Save the Children’ between September 2015 to January 2016, across all wards in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area.

It was found out by the survey that there are a total 28,560 street children, of them, 70 percent work on streets and return to their families after work, 15 percent are those from homeless families living on streets, while 3 percent are street children who do not have families. All these children are vulnerable to all forms of abuse, including physical, emotional and sexual.

They are deprived of nutritious food, water, toilets, education, among other basic facilities. Most of the street children surveyed were migrated from Telangana districts, followed by Andhra Pradesh and even states like Karnataka, Rajasthan, among others. These street children were concentrated at places where they have access to work, a place to sleep in the night, public toilets, water, among other factors.
