3 Nigerians held for online fraud

Bangalore, February 20: The Cyber Crime Police Station of CID, Bangalore has busted an online lottery racket involving three Nigerians.

They were using black-inked dollars and cheating people online.

The accused have been identified as Collins Osarbo Jacobs (37), Bamidele Emmanuel Kent (38) and Godson Omorodion alias Junior alias Sir Joseph (36), all from Nigeria. CID officers said the passports of two had already expired and they were based in Mumbai. Emails sent by them were traced to Mumbai.

Based on a complaint lodged by a retired officer, the cyber crime police took up the case. The complainant had allegedly received an email from a person calling herself Mrs Linda Joy, from Fedex company, who said that a parcel containing an international cashier bank draft/cheque worth USD 800,000 will be delivered to him for winning a lottery, only if he delivered his information.

When the complainant replied, he was contacted by some people who asked him to deposit Rs 75,000 in two bank accounts in Mumbai, as customer care and service charges. The complainant followed the directions. On February 15, Joseph approached the complainant’s residence and handed him a bag, saying it was filled with cash. He claimed that as transporting such a huge amount was difficult, they had coated it with a special ink which should be removed using a solution.

He demanded money to buy the solution, which made the complainant suspicious, as he had already shelled out Rs 10,000. He informed the police.

Police arrested Joseph near the KFC store in Majestic. Others were arrested soon thereafter.
