3 crore people to get UID numbers in first phase

Hyderabad, October 09: By March next year, about 3.11 crore people residing in seven districts of the state will get the unique identification (UID) numbers under the Centre’s flagship programme, the Aadhar project. Chief minister K Rosaiah is likely to launch the project in the state on November 1 and issue the unique identification numbers to the beneficiaries.

Unlike the popular perception, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will not issue any card but will only give a unique identification number to each individual. The UID number is a random number of 12 digits and is valid for 200 years.

As part of the project, the UIDAI officials will collect the demographic details like name of an individual, date of birth and complete residential address along with details of his/her family members and also information like driving license, phone number and bank accounts. They should also provide biometric data including facial image, finger prints and iris scan. The entire information will be fed into the UIDAI servers through online to provide the UID number. Such information will be used for implementation of government programmes to prevent duplication or bogus beneficiaries.

The UID numbers are not mandatory and people apprehensive about their privacy can avoid applying for the UID number.

However, the officials of UIDAI which implements the Aadhar project, assure that the data procured under the project will be secure and privacy of every individual is protected. “The UID number itself does not guarantee any benefits but gives an identity using which the UID number holder can easily get benefited under the government schemes. People can avoid registering for the UID number but it will soon be made mandatory for every government scheme in future,” said VS Bhaskar, deputy director general of the UIDAI Regional Office in Hyderabad.

The UID numbers will be issued in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) along with the districts of Rangareddy, Adilabad, Srikakulam, East Godavari, Anantapur and Chittoor. Currently, enrolments are being done in the villages of Raviryal, Tukkuguda, Imamguda, Sardarnagar, Mankal and Mansanpalli villages of Maheswaram mandal in Rangareddy district. In all, 24,000 enrolments have been completed but they are yet to issue UID numbers to the applicants.

Efforts are also on to initiate the UIDAI project in the remaining 16 districts in the next four-five months.

People can register themselves online on website ‘http://aadhaar.ap.gov.in’ to provide demographic details online. However, they have to visit the designated UID station and provide their biometric data.
