Israel: As many as 28 Palestinian Journalists are held as prisoners in Israeli jails announced the Committee supporting Palestinian Journalists yesterday.
Describing the journalists’ arrest as “barbaric and arbitrary” the Committee condemned Israel for also arresting Director of Information at the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, Thaer Shartih, from his residence in Al-Mazraa Al-Gharbia.
In a statement released by the committee, it said, “The Israeli occupation tries to muzzle the Palestinian journalists’ mouths and to prevent them from unmasking its barbaric practices in the occupied Palestinian territories to the international media.”
Last week Israeli forces arrested a Palestinian Authority’s broadcaster correspondent Bakr Abdel Haqq while he was returning from Cairo after receiving a reporting award. He was detained for interrogation at the Al-Karama border crossing between Israel and Jordan. Later he was interrogated at Al-Maskobia police station in Jerusalem.
Earlier this month a 21-year-old Ola Marshoud was arrested by Israeli forces from the Balata refugee camp in Nablus after she was summoned for interrogation.
The Committee also pointed the detention of the six Palestinian journalists, Mahmoud Issa, Salah Awad, Ahmed El-Saifi, Hamam Atili, Yousef Shalabi and Munzer Khalaf Mufleh, who were all awarded jail sentence over past few years.
Another group of six journalists is under administrative detention on incitement charges. They are Nidal Abu Akkar, Hammam Hantash, Mohammed Shukri Awad, Abdullah Shatat, Estabruq Tamimi and Beshra Al Tawil, according to the Committee’s statement, Middle East Monitor reports.
