270 Mandals Hit In Rain Havoc In Coastal Region

Hyderabad, November 02: The toll in the torrential rains in the coastal Andhra region has risen to 16 and standing crop in 99,730 hectare was damaged in seven districts.

Disclosing this to mediapersons in the Secretariat on Tuesday, the Disaster Management Commissioner, Mr T Radha, said that the depression over Bay of Bengal caused heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coastal districts. The rains left a trail of destruction in 270 mandals, including 53 mandals in East Godavari, 43 in Visakhapatnam, 45 in West Godavari, 20 in Nellore, 39 in Krishna and 27 mandals in Vizianagaram district.

In all, 26,574 people living in low-lying areas have been shifted to 73 relief camps set up in these districts, he said, adding that some 8,884 people were shifted to 38 relief camps in East Godavari district, 15,451 people to 23 relief camps in Visakhapatnam district, 100 to two relief camps in Nellore and 2,139 people shifted to 16 relief camps in Krishna district.

Regarding loss of human life, 16 persons, including five in East Godavari, five in Visakhapatnam, one in each West Godavari and Vizianagaram and two persons in each Nellore and Prakasham districts, died due to heavy rains. In East Godavari district, six persons went missing, he added. In all 2,698 houses were damaged due to heavy rains, he added.

The crops were damaged in 99,730 hectare, including 22,557 hectare in East Godavari, 13,400 hectare in Visakhapatnam, 31,000 hectare in West Godavari, 400 hectare in Nellore, 43,707 hectare in Krishna, 12,382 hectare in Srikakulam and 7,284 hectare in Vizianagaram district.
