25,000 people stuck in Andhra’s Kurnool

Kurnool, October 03: In Andhra Pradesh, the situation is no better; the floods are a result of rains and excess water released from dams from Karnataka.

More than 25,000 people are left marooned in Kurnool district; 700-800 people are reportedly missing. Four lakh food packets have been dropped in affected areas.

15,000 people in Vijayawada have to be shifted to safer places. 2400 passengers of the Delhi-bound Rajdhani and Karnataka Express are stranded at Raichur Railway Station for more than a day.

125 boats are out on rescue work but the infrastructure available is not enough to carry out the operations. Mantralayam was the first town to be inundated by the waters. Eleven gates of the Srisailam dam have been opened.

Army and Air Force helicopters are helping in rescue operations. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has assured Andhra Pradesh of all help.

Chief Minister Rosiah has asked the Karnataka CM not to release more water from dams.

The stretch of the busy Hyderabad-Bangalore highway is washed off in Mehboodnagar area. Hundreds of trucks and other vehicles are lined up on the highway, many of them submerged. No more traffic from Hyderabad side is being allowed on highway.
