250 GHMC projects remain incomplete since YSR time

A quick look through Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation files point out how the civic body has commissioned numerous projects.

More or less 250 projects of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation are pending in its office. The then Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy make the first move to launched these projects and his successors K. Rosaiah and N. Kiran Kumar Reddy continues it.

Each year, the GHMC allocates a chunk of its annual budget towards the city’s development, and every year it ends up spending only a small percentage of that sum

The projects include the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project, link roads, heritage work, road-under-bridges, road-over-bridges, a sports complex and a mini-stadium under the Greater Hyderabad jurisdiction.

About 40 per cent of the works are 25 per cent complete whereas the rest are still at the tendering stage. Put together, works to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore have not yet been accomplished.

As many as 77 road related works have been taken up by the GHMC’s engineering projects wing, of which eight have been accomplished, 16 are under tendering process, six project estimates have been under revision and the remaining have either started recently or the work is in progress.

Only the granite pavement from Charminar to Gulzar Houz, and on the other side, to Sardar Mahal Road has been completed when talk about the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project and the rest of the projects under CPP are still in progress.

Under heritage work, the conservation of the Charkamans, restoration of Mahaboob Mansion, restoration of Sardar Mahal, Murgi Chowk and a few others have concluded, whereas others are awaiting approval.

Other projects like sports complex in Hindinagar, Goshamahal, a swimming pool and mini indoor stadium at Kukatpally are stuck at the initial stages. Elections, transfer of officials, legal issues are being cited by the GHMC officials might be the reason for the delay in works.
