Kolkata: Over 25 lakh people today participated in a ‘Hand Wash Day’ programme organised throughout the North 24 Parganas district by the West Bengal government as a part of the mission ‘Nirmal Bangla’ programme.
With support from the UNICEF, the state government initiated a social and mass campaign in the district involving children towards sanitation and hygiene.
The huge participation, is expected to be recorded in the Guinness of World Records and Limca Book of Records, a UNICEF release said.
The current Guinness of World Records belonged to Madhya Pradesh with 10 lakh people participating in the ‘Hand Wash’.
The programme commenced at 1.30 PM with the blowing of conch shells and siren with the main event taking place at Barasat’s Kachhari Maidan along with similar events at various schools and administrative buildings.
State Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee and Food Minister Jyotipriya Mullick were present at the occasion.
