24 killed in Afghan flash floods

At least 24 people were killed and nine others injured Saturday due to heavy rains and flash floods in Afghanistan’s western province of Ghor, Xinhua reported.

Provincial government spokesman Abdul Hai Khatibi said the floods washed away many houses and destroyed farmlands in the province, around 400 km west of Kabul.

The waters have damaged parts of the supportive wall of the Munar-i-Jam, a 65-metre-tall minaret which is a Unesco World Heritage Site in the country.

On Friday, seven people were killed and over 20 went missing in floods in the northeastern Badakhshan province.
