24 CPI(M) workers get life sentence for murder

Kannur (Ker), April 20: A local court today sentenced 24 CPI(M) workers to life imprisonment for murdering two persons, including a 70-year-old woman, by hurling bombs at the jeep in which they were travelling as a sequel to political clashes in the area in 2002.

The woman, Ammu Amma, and jeep driver Shihab were killed while they were returning after attending the funeral of a BJP worker killed in political clashes with the CPI(M).

Four others in the vehicle were injured in the attack that took place on May 23, 2002.

The first accused had been absconding and the remaining 24 accused were awarded life imprisonment by Thalassery Sessions Judge L Lalithabhai.

They were found guilty under various IPC sections including 302 (murder). A fine of Rs 10,000 each was also imposed.
