New Delhi: At least 22 people were on Thursday injured, some of them seriously, in clashes that broke out at Nainagla village in Shamli district, after members of a tribal community were allegedly evicted from their homes allocated under the Indira Awas scheme.
Police circle officer Kuldeep Kukreti said some supporters of the village headman had tried to forcibly evict the members of tribal community from their homes which led to a confrontation between the two groups in which 22 people were injured.
The two groups pelted stones at each other and also used firearms during the clash, in which houses belonging to the tribals were set ablaze.
Senior police officers have rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Security has been tightened in the village with deployment of additional police personnel and PAC in the area to defuse tensions.
The injured were rushed to different hospitals where some of them are stated to be in a serious condition.
