22 injured in clashes over Muharram procession

Bareilly: At least 22 people were injured in clashes over Muharram procession in different parts of the district today, police said.

In the first incident in Rasola village in Nawabganj tehsil, members of two communities clashed and indulged in brick-batting over taking-out of tazia procession leading injuries to 19 people, they said.

Some persons allegedly opened fire, police said, adding the injured have been admitted to a hospital.

In the second incident in Baheri area, a dispute broke out after processionists insisted on cutting down branches of a peepal tree to facilitate movement of the tazia procession which was opposed by the other community, police said, adding in the ensuing clashes three people were injured.

District Magistrate Pankaj Yadav said the situation was now “under control” and additional forces has been deployed as a precautionary measure.
