21 convicts were awarded life term by the special trial court which is trying the 2002 Deepda Darwaja massacre case in Gujarat. The court also awarded one year sentence to a police officer for dereliction of duty.
While acquitting 61 out of 85 accused in the case the court held 22 guilty in Gujarat communal violence.
On February 28, 2002, 11 people including four children and five women were burnt to death by a mob at Chudiwas area of Visnagar town, near Deepda Darwaja.
The case was taken up by special investigation team (SIT) appointed by the Supreme Court.
