21 die in bus crash in Afghanistan

Kabul, May 15: Twenty-one people were killed in northern Afghanistan when a bus veered off the road and plunged into a river in Balkh province.

The accident happened at around 6 a.m. local time (0130 GMT) on Saturday in Balkh district, located 322 kilometers (200 miles) northwest of the capital Kabul, AFP reported.

The Afghan Interior Ministry issued a statement saying that the driver of the bus was apparently driving at a high speed when he lost control of the vehicle, and the bus then skidded off the road and fell into the river.

The victims were all members of the same family, who died on the spot. There were three women and 15 children among the dead.

Ghulam Sakhi Jafari, a police official in Balkh province, said rescue workers had recovered 20 bodies. He added that rescuers were still working to recover the missing body of a child.
