200 yr old historic well converted into garbage pit at EFLU campus

During royal kingdom subjects’ welfare was given the topmost priority. Special attention was given to provide pure drinking water to the subjects. Innumerable wells were dug during Qutub Shahi and Asif Jahi era to provide clean potable water to the public. One such old well is located at the premise of English ad Foreign Language University (EFLU).

The three storied well is an architectural masterpiece in which each storey comprises of 5 arches. But sadly due to criminal negligence of University administration the heritage well is on the verge of destruction. What remains in the name of the historical well is a thicket of dead vegetation, discarded plastic waste, broken sewage pipes and empty beer bottles. It seems that the more than 200 years old well is deliberately being converted into a garbage pit to wipe out the signs of Asifjahi rulers.

Christina Canton, founding president of the EFLU Heritage Conservation Committee, blames the general apathy of the university administration and the lack of awareness among the students for the sorry state of the heritage well.

The historical well is in very precarious condition; weeds and shrubs are sprouted out of the arches resulting in cracks. It has also been learnt that if construction work is carried out anywhere in the IFLU the debris are thrown in the well. It must be noted that the well also received a Heritage status by INTACH in 2008.
