200 students fall sick after consuming iron tablets

About 200 students fall ill after they consumed iron (folic acid) tablets on Tuesday. According to sources students from Zilla Parishad High School in Dharmaram village complained stomach pain, loose motions and vomiting. By evening, majority students showed the same symptoms while some fell unconscious due to loss of body fluids.

As many as 80 students were admitted to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital (MGMH) here, said Regional Director (Medical and Health) Nageshwar Rao. Remaining students were given treatment as outpatients and were discharged.

Local Primary Health Centre has conducted a health camp at the school and distributed iron supplements to the students for iron deficiency (anemia). However, the students consumed the supplements before lunch which they were supposed to take after lunch.

District Collector V Karuna visited the hospital and took stock of the situation, he assured that a severe action would be taken if anyone was found acted in negligent manner.

Meanwhile, activists of AISF led by its national president Syed Valiullah Qadri staged a demonstration at the hospital and demanded suspension of DEO Chandra Mohan.
