Mumbai: Fugitive businessman Nirav Modi’s 125 acres of land in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar has been reclaimed by 200 farmers. The piece of land belonging to Modi was seized by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the multi-billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam.
The farmers said that Modi had acquired their land on a lesser price than its prevailing rate. As per the local media, they have already started to plough the land with the help of a tractor. The group of farmers arrived on bullock cart at the tract of land at Khandala in Karjat tehsil and ploughed a part of it, in a gesture to ‘reclaim’ their land. They said that they would start cultivating on the full stretch of it.
A protest was demonstrated on Saturday to show that they have taken their land, that was acquired by Modi’s Firestar company some years ago.
Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi have been under investigation after Punjab National Bank (PNB) had alleged them of cheating to the tune of over Rs 12,000 crore, with the purported help of some PNB’s employees. Modi had allegedly acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking (LoUs) from the bank to take loans from foreign branches.
He escaped the country before a complaint was registered against him
