Mumbai, August 03: Seven people, including a woman, were injured when a 20-year-old resident of Napean Sea Road, speeding in a Maruti Swift car, lost control and rammed into three taxis near Girgaum Chowpatty on Sunday afternoon.
Abhay Shah, 20, was speeding on Marine Drive towards Babulnath when one of the rear wheels got punctured and he applied the handbrake, the police said. However, he could not control the vehicle and rammed into the taxis, they said.
The drivers of the three taxis, two passengers and a pedestrian sustained injuries and they were admitted to Nair and JJ hospitals. Shah, who suffered minor injuries on his chest, was rushed to Breach Candy hospital, sub-inspector Vijay Shinde of the DB Marg police station said.
According to preliminary medical reports, Shah was not under the influence of alcohol, the police said.
Kunal Sharma, who witnessed the accident, said, “I was standing near my stall. I saw a speeding Maruti Swift car (travelling at around 70km/h) coming from Marine Drive. The car rammed into a taxi. It even knocked down a pedestrian.”
Sharma immediately called the police control number and informed the police chowkie located near the area about the accident. He then called his friends from other stalls who then rushed the victims to hospitals.
“We are recording the statements of all the injured people and the eye-witnesses. We are trying to ascertain the cause of the accident,” Shinde said.
