20-year-old newly-wed woman jumps into river, body not found

Sheopur: A 20-year-old newly-wed woman jumped into the Chambal river from a bridge on Sunday in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh, police said.

Search is on to trace the woman, an official said.

30 min after ‘bidaai’

The incident occurred around 7 am, nearly 30 minutes after the ‘bidaai’ (bride send-off) ceremony was held in a village in neighbouring Rajasthan, said Samarasa police post in-charge Brijraj Yadav.

After the ceremony, the woman, accompanied by her husband and others, was travelling in a car to the village of her in-laws in Sheopur district, he said.

“When the vehicle reached Pali bridge on the Chambal river, the bride asked the driver to stop the car saying she wanted to throw up. When the driver didn’t stop, she held the steering with her hands, forcing him to apply brakes,” said Yadav.

Before the groom and others could understand, the woman ran out of the car and jumped off the bridge, he said.

Rescue operation is on

“She remains missing. Rescue operation is on,” the official said.

Shocked father of the deceased said everything was fine during the marriage which was held on Saturday night.
