20 injured in clash between Muslims and Christians in Pak

Lahore,May 01:Twenty people were injured in a clash between Muslims and Christians over the alleged desecration of the Quran at Gujranwala in Pakistan’s Punjab province today, police said.

Forty people were arrested by police following the clash.

Police officials said there had been tension between Muslims and the minority Christian community in Gulzar Colony at Gujranwala city for the past 10 days following reports that some unidentified persons had allegedly burnt pages of the Quran.

Police initially registered a case against two Christians and arrested them.

Tension mounted again today after a rumour was spread that some Christians had again burnt pages of the Quran.

Members of the Muslim community took to the streets and staged a protest on Gujranwala’s main thoroughfare.

The protestors then went to a Christian school and church in Gulzar Colony.

The protestors allegedly attacked the school, triggering a clash with the Christians.

Twenty people were injured before police reached the spot and controlled the situation.

The situation in the area was tense and police had been deployed to avert any untoward incident, Superintendent of Police Mubashar Makani told the media.

He said it was not clear who had allegedly desecrated the Quran.

No one could be held responsible without an investigation, he said.
