Patiala, August 12: Two children of Sikligar basti ( a colony of rag pickers)- a slum area – have managed to get admission in engineering stream in Thapar college here and another at government institute.
With the efforts of Malwa Arts Sports Cultural and Educational Trust (MASCUT) in the 62 years of history of Sikligar Basti two students have cleared Joint Entrance Test (JET) and have secured admission in Thapar polytechnic and Government polytechnic for girls, Patiala.
Gurjant Singh and a girl Sarbjit Kaur of Basti are proud for their parents as they have cleared JET and secured seat in polytechnics.
An evening school is being running by MASCUT for school going and drop out kids of the Basti. Presently 94 students are on roll, said Ravi Bhushan, a convener of MASCUT, here today.
MASCUT is bearing all the expenditure of study material and also bearing school fees and uniforms etc.
MASCUT is a NGO which has dedicatedly been in service for the welfare and development of downtrodden part of the society since more than 10 years. MASCUT is running free stitching centre for poor girls also.
