Two more persons were arrested in connection with the Azad Maidan protests against atrocities on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 26. The two men namely Niyazuddin Shaikh and Hussain Ansari were apprehended from Wadala and Kurla respectively. Both of them have been remanded in police custody till August 28 by a metropolitan court.
Two persons were killed and many injured when a rally in Mumbai’s Azad Maidan against Assam riots and attacks on Muslims in Myanmar turned violent on Saturday. Demonstrators torched vehicles and pelted stones and even snatched rifle from the police man.
Investigators sniff the role of some Assam politicians behind the violence and opined that the agitation was orchestrated rather than being spontaneous.
Rioters were brought to the spot in hired buses and were armed with lathis, sickles and other instruments, claimed probe agencies, which clearly indicate that some people came to the protest venue only to create disturbances.
The probe agency also believed that Raza Academy, the organiser of Saturday’s protest in Mumbai’s Azad Maidan, may not have links with the violent mob, which came to the venue in the garb of protesters.
