2 killed as Yemeni protests intensify

Sanaa, September 28: At least two people have been killed and several others injured around the Yemeni capital of Sana’a in the continuing protests against Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh, Press TV reports.

On Tuesday, Yemeni security forces killed at least two protesters and injured several others in the mountainous region of Arhab on the outskirts of Sana’a.

The latest killings in the district come as Saleh’s regime continues its brutal clampdown on anti-government protesters that again took to the streets in the capital, calling for the ouster of Saleh.

The protesters, enraged over Saleh’s surprise return to Yemen last Friday followed by a drastic climb in deadly crackdowns on peaceful anti-regime rallies, called for a million-man march on Wednesday against Saleh’s rule.

Also on Tuesday, an explosion in Sana’a hit the central security forces’ headquarters — a division which is believed to have been involved in the recent crackdowns. No casualties have been reported so far.

Meanwhile, regime forces have stepped up violence against protesters, killing over 100 people in the past week and escalating the brutal suppression of Yemenis following Saleh’s return.

Saleh returned to the country after spending more than three months in Saudi Arabia for medical treatment following a rocket attack on the presidential palace on June 3.

Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis have held regular anti-regime protests in major cities across the country since January to demand an end to Saleh’s three decades of rule.

Protesters have also been demanding an end to poverty and widespread corruption as well as a halt in Saudi and US meddling in the country’s internal affairs.
