2 killed in plane crash in DR Congo

Congo, October 22: Two people have lost their lives when a privately-owned cargo plane crashed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, an airport official says.

The incident took place on Thursday when a plane en route from Bukavu to Shabunda crashed near Bugulumisa, just five minutes after take off.

The Filipino pilot and the Congolese co-pilot on board died at the scene, a Press TV correspondent quoted an airport official as saying on Friday.

The aircraft which was a Let-410 of Czech manufacture, belonged to the private Congolese company Tracep and was carrying consignments of food and other goods.

The last air crash in the country had occurred in August, when a passenger plane operated by a private company crash landed at an airport in western Democratic Republic of Congo, claiming the lives of 20 of the 21 people on board.

Air traffic accidents are common in the African country, where safety regulations are ignored and the aviation sector is mostly made up of ageing Soviet-era planes.
