2 brothers killed in explosion at home

Madurai, June 29: Two brothers were killed in an explosion, suspected to be caused by a kerosene can burst in their house at Bethaniapuram here today. Police sources said the neighbours heard a big explosion from one of the houses situated at Aasai Thambi Street in Bethaniapuram Area in the wee hours of today.

They found the house on fire with black smoke emanating. On a complaint from the public, police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. Later, police recovered the charred body of M Naganathan, while his brother M Vadivel Selvam was found trapped under the debris of a portion of wall that collapsed in the impact. Vadivel Selvam, who was seriously injured, died on the way to the Government Rajaji Hospital.

Family sources said Naganathan had served as a chef in a private firm in Iraq that had supplied food for the American forces and recently returned to India. Though the cause of the explosion is still under investigation, police suspect it might have been due to the explosion of the kerosene can.
