2 bookies caught red-handed from Marredpally

Hyderabad, April 04: Yet another cricket betting racket was busted during the World Cup final clash between India and Sri Lanka on Saturday, with police arresting two bookies from Marredpally. Police seized a portable television, six mobile phones, Rs 2.03 lakh cash and documents.

According to police, the bookies ran their show from Nagarjunasagar but as they were tracked down, they fled from there and were caught in their hideout at Marredpally. The accused, 43-year-old C Arjun Kumar alias Anoop is a quarry businessman from Marredpally and 44-year-old Venugopal is a share broker from Kacheguda. Both were facing financial problems and decided to make easy money by betting to cash in on the cricket fever, police said.

With police maintaining strict vigil on hotels, resorts and pubs, the duo took temporary accommodation at Marredpally to organise their illegal activity. “Initially, the duo were tracked to Nagarjunasagar where they were orgainsing their racket. As we tried to nab them, they fled from the place and we gave chase. Finally, the duo was caught in their hideout at Marredpally,’’ Task Force deputy commissioner of police VB Kamalasan Reddy said. They were caught red-handed accepting bets, he added.
