Kolkata, Aug 21: Two prime accused in connection with a clash between two factions of the ruling Trinamool Congress at Tangra area of the city were arrested, and arms and ammunition seized from their possession, the police said on Friday.
With the arrest made late last night, 16 persons have been arrested in connection with the clash in which five police personnel were injured.
The duo, Prabir Sarkar alias Bapi (39) and Alok Khatua (45), both residents of Christopher Road in Tangra police station area were arrested from Pragati Maidan area by the Anti-Rowdy Section of Kolkata Police Detective Department, Joint CP (Crime) Pallab Ghosh said today.
One country-made six-chambered firearm was recovered from Bapi while two live cartridges were seized from Alok, Ghosh said.
The arrested duo are active TMC members and close to senior leaders of the party, a senior police official said.
Five police personnel were injured in the clash in which bombs were hurled and five rounds of bullets fired.
The policemen were injured in stone-pelting incident when they arrived at the spot to control the situation.
